NOSSCR AWARDS FORMER DIRECTOR OF GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS, ETHEL ZELENSKE, NANCY G. SHOR LEADERSHIP AWARD

Washington DC – On June 9, 2017, The National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) presented Nancy G. Shor Leadership Award to former Director of Government Affairs, Ethel Zelenske, at its annual spring conference.

“It is my genuine pleasure to present the Nancy G. Shor Leadership Award to Ethel for her years of outstanding service fighting for the rights of people with disabilities, and for her efforts to preserve and improve the Social Security disability programs,” said NOSSCR Executive Director, Barbara Silverstone at the conference. “Ethel’s dedication and selflessness are qualities that I hope all attorneys and advocates try to emulate. I am fortunate to have worked with Ethel and I am honored to call her my friend.”

The Nancy G. Shor Leadership Award, named for NOSSCR’s founder and Executive Director from 1979 to 2013, is presented to an individual who has shown exceptional leadership, and whose work and actions for NOSSCR have gone above and beyond – to support the organization’s ongoing efforts secure a financial lifeline for people with disabilities. 

 “There are times when I’m faced with a problem and I think to myself, ‘what would Ethel do?’, said Kate Callery, NOSSCR Board Member and Chair of NOSSCR’s Award Committee. “Ethel was particularly generous in sharing her work and knowledge – and so generous in helping to bring many of us along in our careers and missions.  I’m grateful to have worked with Ethel and I thank her for her years of work with NOSSCR”

Ethel has been a longtime advocate for people with disabilities for the last 35 years. She began her legal career at the Legal Aid Bureau, Inc., in Baltimore, MD, where she represented individuals in disability claims and worked on class action litigation. She then worked at National Senior Citizens Law Center (now Justice in Aging), focusing on administrative and legislative policy issues related to the Social Security disability programs. In 1999, Ethel joined NOSSCR as Director of Government Affairs and led the efforts to improve the Social Security program in Washington.

*NOSSCR is a specialized bar association for attorneys and advocates who represent Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income claimants throughout the adjudicative process. Since 1979, NOSSCR has been providing continuing legal education to its thousands of members and public policy advocacy on behalf of its members and the people with disabilities they represent. NOSSCR is a non-partisan organization.
