Associate Attorneys

Location: Portland, OR

Kerr Robichaux & Carroll (KRC) is the largest Social Security Disability law firm in the Pacific Northwest. Our office is located in SE Portland, Oregon. KRC is dedicated to providing opportunities for professional growth for all of our employees. We are currently seeking to hire multiple associates. We are open to interviewing candidates with varying experience. We have a robust training system in place for recent graduates, newer attorneys or those inexperienced in the area of Social Security disability law. Those with multiple years of experience are also encouraged to apply.

Our associate attorney positions are ideal for attorneys dedicated to helping others. We hire two types of associates: hearings attorneys and appellate attorneys.

  • Hearings Attorneys

To start, primary duties will include assisting senior attorneys in preparing cases by requesting medical records and getting opinions from doctors. New associates will sit in on client meetings and learn how to interview clients and spot common issues. Part of our training process also involves learning the law through occasional appellate brief-writing. Eventually, the new associate will graduate to handling their own caseload. This involves interviewing clients and witnesses on their own, directing legal assistants with regard to what evidence should be requested, and appearing at hearings to present cases and to cross examine witnesses. Those with more experience may be able to more quickly take on their own caseload. We work to adjust our training program and case load to each associate’s skill level and ability.

  • Appellate Attorneys

Primary duties will include reviewing decisions for potential appeals to administrative review or federal court as appropriate, and drafting administrative briefs as well as legal pleadings and memoranda. Eventually, the new associate will be responsible for briefing multiple cases in District Court and potentially Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior writing experience (or law review) is extremely helpful. Those with more experience may be able to more quickly take on higher-level appeals.

Typically, we expect associates to perform their job out of our office located in SE Portland and to keep regular 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. business hours. Hearings attorneys would also expect to travel 1-2 days a week to hearings office locations throughout the Pacific NW. However, due to the pandemic and hearings office closures, working out of our Portland office and traveling is not necessary at this time. We are open to interviewing applicants that wish to work remotely.
