Job Summary

Seeking a dedicated Social Security Disability Attorney to join our law firm based in Abingdon, VA. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in handling Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) cases, including representation before administrative law judges (ALJs) and appeals council. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney passionate about helping clients navigate the complexities of Social Security law while providing high-quality legal services.

Job Responsibilities

  • Meet with potential new clients in person or by phone to determine their eligibility for benefits and discuss details about their potential case to assess if it is a case the firm will take.
  • Manage a caseload of disability claims from initial applications to hearings and appeals.
  • Collect and review medical records, employment history, and other relevant documents in support of clients’ disability claim.
  • Maintain regular contact with clients, medical providers, and Social Security Administration officials to ensure timely case progression. Be available to answer questions from client as needed.
  • Draft and file legal documents such as briefs, motions, and appeals to the Social Security Appeals Council and federal court.
  • Represent clients at hearings before administrative law judges (ALJs), presenting compelling arguments and evidence in support of the client’s claim.
  • Stay up to date on Social Security Administration regulations to provide the best possible representation to clients.
  • The firm encourages associates to develop other areas of practice that interest them and benefit the firm’s clients.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Job Qualifications

  • Must be licensed to practice law in either Tennessee or Virginia.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and the ability to interpret medical records and diagnostic testing results.
  • Proficiency in legal research and writing is essential for drafting legal briefs and other documents required for disability claims and appeals.
  • Compassionate and client-focused, with the ability to work closely with individuals who are facing difficult circumstances.
  • Must be an excellent written and verbal communicator. Daily interaction with clients and staff members is essential.
  • Proven ability to manage a high-volume caseload and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience representing clients in Social Security Disability hearings and appeals before administrative law judges.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Social Security Disability law or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and SSA procedures.
