Washington Post article provides stinging critique of the SSA

  October 7, 2022

NOSSCR President David Camp was quoted in a Washington Post story this morning that provided a stinging critique of the Social Security Administration. The article exposed the widespread impact the agency’s decline in service has had for people applying for disability and other benefits.

Among the facts included in the article were:

  • During the first week in September, 21 percent of disabled claimants waited 29 to 45 days for a phone appointment and another 24 percent more than 45 days.
  • Field office staff members answered just 66 percent of calls from the start of the fiscal year through August, down from 76 percent in fiscal 2019.

NOSSCR continues to advocate for a full reopening of field offices and modernization of the Social Security Administration’s services. This includes allowing representatives better digital access to their clients’ files and flexible use of electronic signatures.
