Social Security Advisory Board Announces the Appointment of Amy Shuart as Chair

November 20, 2025

The Social Security Independence and Program Improvements Act of 1994 established a bipartisan Social Security Advisory Board composed of up to seven Board members appointed by Congress and the White House. The Board’s mission is to “advise the President, Congress, and Commissioner of Social Security on the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income programs. The Board is comprised of Presidential and Congressional appointees supported by professional staff.”

This month, the President designated Amy Shuart as Chair of the Social Security Advisory Board. Shuart has served as a Board Member on the SSAB as the House Republican appointee since October 2022. She previously served on the Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee staff from 2011 to 2021, serving as Subcommittee Staff Director from 2015 to 2021.
